Writing 101: Be Brief

You stumble upon a random letter on the path. You read it. It affects you deeply, and you wish it could be returned to the person to which it’s addressed. Write a story about this encounter.

Today’s twist: Approach this post in as few words as possible.

Walking down the sidewalk, a breeze throws a crumbled up paper across my path.  I picked it up to throw away, but notice some writing slightly smeared across.  It had been a little wet at one point.  It looked like tear stains.

You are more than what you have become.

– Jez

I’m not sure who this was for, but as I stare down at the paper, I realize that maybe in reality I was meant to find it.  It struck a deep cord with me, as I have been frustrated and confused with my state of life.  If someone else believes this to be true about me, then I must be correct.  I must find this Jez.

{Yeah I know, I twisted the prompt a little. 😛  What can I say.}

Writing 101: Serially Lost Part 1

Write about a loss: something (or someone) that was part of your life, and isn’t any more.
Today’s twist: Make today’s post the first in a three-post series.

I am going to talk to you today about myself.  I lost myself, my identity, and everything I wanted to be.  Back in 2008 I switched majors and schools from a community college taking CIS classes to a private college going for veterinary technician.  I could only go part time, and had a hard time only towards the end of the general education classes that were before getting into the actual program.  It was a restricted program and only 25 people a year were allowed in out of a couple hundred.  Also, you could only apply twice, after that you’re SOL.  I didn’t get in.  After the first rejection (and knowing of other people who DID get in) I was pretty depressed for a while.  I really had to think about things, and maybe thought that I actually didn’t want to do that.  When I realized this, I  had wasted a good 5 years of my life and about $8,000 worth of loan debt.  I didn’t know what to do.

Writing 101: Music

Write about the three most important songs in your life — what do they mean to you?

I’m skipping this one, because I have a very strange relationship with music.  I don’t have any songs that are most important to me, the songs that mean everything to me change from mood to mood, and moment to moment.  I seriously sat here at my desk for like 20 minutes and could not come up with one song in particular.  Music is like therapy for your soul.  Whatever mood I’m in, I have certain songs that call out to me.  I don’t really consider them to be the most important things in my life, just to what I am feeling at that moment.

Writing 101: A Room with a View (or Just a View)

If you could zoom through space in the speed of light, what place would you go to right now?
Today’s twist: organize your post around the description of a setting.

It’s all I can hear, see, and smell.  The roar it makes echoes around me.  It’s all I can do not to just run and swan dive to the waters below, but that would be certain death from the rocky stalagmites just below the crystal clear glassy surface.  The sun shines at just the right angle, and a rainbow appears in the valley just outside.  If I could fly I could maybe touch it.  The water, however, rains down eternally from the heavens.  I cannot leave.  This is my prison.

Writing 101 – Day 1 Free Write

To get started, let’s loosen up. Let’s unlock the mind. Today, take twenty minutes to free write. And don’t think about what you’ll write. Just write.

And for your first twist? Publish this stream-of-consciousness post on your blog.

I ended up a little late in the Writing-101 gig.  It started Monday this week so this is what I am going to do today.  Monday’s prompt was about free-writing.  So for the next twenty minutes I will just continue to type out whatever garbage floats through my brain.  I apologize in advance.  No, I really do apologize.  x__x
